Our collection is a bank of cultural and biological information that cannot be found in exhibition galleries. It is a science-based on research and comprehensive study which gives us access to valuable resources. We maintain different cultural and scientific collections that are exclusively for the use of studies in their quest to improve our knowledge and understanding of the world and to use such enlightenment to solve critical problems that we are facing today.

We have a staff of technical officers, collection managers and research scientists who on and with our collections with a focus of finding answers to questions regarding our history and environment. Some students work on these areas as we supervise their work to make sure that it is top-notch.

Biodiversity

This refers to the variety of life, living organisms and ecosystems as they exist in today’s world. Biodiversity is essential for the sustainability of the world, and at Museum Avignon, our researchers continue to discover newer life forms. This is possible due to expeditions to previously inaccessible places like isolated islands and ocean depths.

There are also times when newer life forms are discovered close by in an inhabited environment. Through this fieldwork, we continue to grow our biological collection specimen, including porotypes and holotypes. The essence of these biological specimen collections is to help us understand the biodiversity patterns and how the roles they play in sustaining life on the planet.

Our research also allows us to identify and monitor the factors that threaten our biodiversity, such as urbanisation, invasive species, and climate change. Biodiversity research is conducted with objectivity with a focus is to understand the environment and make decisions based on such understanding. It has also helped in understanding endangered and threatened species and improve general knowledge of fauna.

Earth Science

This branch of science is what our palaeontology and mineralogy collections entail. It deals with minerals, fossils, rocks, and gemstones and how these things form both naturally and organically. Minerals constitute an integral part of the earth structure today, and they are naturally occurring solids, each with their unique atomic structure and chemical composition. It is from this that they get their physical properties which generally include hardness, tenacity, specific gravity, cleavage, magnetism, reaction when in contact with acid, conduction of electricity, etc.

Minerals come in different colours which may be due to structural irregularities that allows it to absorb and transmit light or due to a trace element added to the mineral. Gemstones are minerals which are prized due to their beautiful patterns and colours. Generally used to make jewellery and other decorative features, our collection contains different minerals and gemstones that can be found in Australia and the pacific region. The minerals and gems in our collections come in their natural form without all the polish that transform them into jewellery. You will also find collectors gemstones which are
too delicate to be worn as jewellery or used for decorative features, yet beautiful enough to be displayed.
